Wiki Post #1 for Richard Wright’s Black Boy: What observations did Richard Wright make about race, class, discrimination, and inequality in the Jim Crow South as a young child? What confused him, and why did he want to know more?

When he was confused about color: what is white or what is black? In his response: "to me they were merely people like other people, yet somehow strangely different because I had never come in close touch with any of them (23)." Richard could never get a straight answer from his mother regarding people of white. And there were times he got hit for one of his questions.

Richard's uncle, Uncle Hoskins has been killed for his successful liquor business because the whites were threatened by his success. The whites did not like the idea that a man of color have be any better of white man; thus Uncle Hoskins was lynched because of it. Not only this was a racist event, it was also a time for his family could not have a funeral for Uncle Hoskins, for rather they were more worried for their next move and for their livelihood. Richard perception of racism is that his anything he says or does could be his last. (Ronnie Randy Serquinia, Jr)

Richard made an observation about the story he heard about the little black boy who was beaten by an older white man. Initially, he thought the white “whipped” the little black boy because he had been bad, Richard thought that was justified. When he learned that the little boy, in fact, was not “whipped” but beaten and for no reason at all. Richard did not understand how that was acceptable, but he received little answers to explain why. Another observation was the “elephants,” described by Richard. He saw men in stripe uniforms “chain gang” and guards with guns. He did not understand why the black men in stripes were the only ones doing the work. His mom explained to him that those men were being punished for something they did and the white men with guns are in command of them. Richard went on to ask questions like, “Why are there so many black men wearing stripes?” Richard’s mom explained they were punished more harshly than white men. As a kid every situation Richard encounters he is trying to make sense of everything, in that case, he saw an example of inequality.

The purpose and principles of free writing – Free writing lets you think on paper. It’s exploratory, open, creative, open-ended brainstorming which allows you to gather some thoughts. Sometimes you don’t know what you think until you start writing. It’s a pre-writing activity – fluid, active – are there more ways to say open? Free writing is free, unstructured, disorganized. You write down whatever comes next in your mind, and you might be surprised at what comes out next. New ideas emerge from the writing like wild flowers springing up spontaneously in a field or on the side of the road or in an empty lot. Free writing is like the sun which gives those flowers energy – it gives your writing process energy because the point is to begin and just do it. Looping free writing asks you to underline one important sentence in your free write and then write again. Ink shedding asks you to free write with another person, the more ink shed, the better. Free writing is a beginning, a place to start on a paper topic, a place to put your ideas down on paper and let them grow, let them develop into something bigger than what you had before the free write. You want your ideas to be deeper and fuller, not paper thin or like shallow water. Don’t just wade in the water, dive deeper into your own ideas within your writing and push them forward to build something that you can use to identify yourself, express yourself and be yourself. Free writing is a tool to open up your brain. It’s not a journal or a diary format; its purpose is solely to break open creativity and break down any walls of resistance to writing. The act of writing itself is freeing and creative and generous. Free writing give you power to begin. It does not have to be organized in any way, just keep writing until your 5 minutes or 6 minutes or 10 minutes is up. (332 words, 10 minute free write)
